Judge Registration Step 1 - Contact Information

Dear Community Judge,

THANK YOU! for volunteering your time to come to our tournament. Our students have worked hard all year long on their speeches and debate plans, but it is these tournaments that really crystallize all that time and training and we could not do it without you. Community, or "lay" judges play a key role in what we are trying to teach our children. A quote from one of our league’s documents entitled "NCFCA Philosophy of Judging" says it well: "…lay judges encourage competitors to become so adept at their particular skill that they can literally teach others and explain their position even to those with no prior knowledge of competitive speech or debate." So whether or not you have speech or debate in your background, you will provide the perfect opportunity for our students to practice being creative and flexible in their presentations.

Your judging experience will take approximately 3 hours; for your training, being in the round and completing your ballots after the round is over. Look over the schedule and determine a time block that would work for you. Please note any of the participants that you may know so we can avoid putting you in a room with them. We try to provide an as objective and impartial judging panel that we can. Please plan on showing up an hour before your round is scheduled to begin for one of our Judge Orientation sessions. You are welcomed and encouraged to judge more than 1 round if your schedule permits. We will have a special “Judge’s Hospitality” room set up just for you, where you can relax and get a bite to eat between rounds.

If you have any questions, please contact our Judge Coordinator, Catherine Mullaney.
